Low blood platelets occur in a large number of febrile illnesses, including:

1 . Dengue fever / dengue haemorrhagic fever / dengue shock syndrome

2 . Septicaemia, including Gram-negative bacteria, typhoid, leptospirosis and borreliosi

3. Rickettsioses

4. Rodent-borne viruses such as Hanta and Lassa feve

5. HIV

6. Malaria ??

7. Visceral leishmaniasis

8. TTP-HUS (thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura – haemolytic uraemic syndrome): often aftercolitis which was treated with antibiotics (lysis of Shiga-toxin containing bacteria).
